What exactly IS gold vermeil?

A lot of our jewellery is described as gold or rose gold vermeil - but what does this mean? The short answer is, it’s a great way to get the feel and look of gold, with a more affordable price tag.
Gold plated jewellery, which is a base metal (eg steel or brass) with a thin coat of gold, can wear thin and expose the wearer to metal allergies.
Gold vermeil, however, is always a base of sterling silver, plated with a thick (min 2.5 microns) layer of 14-24kt gold. This means it is visually indistinguishable from gold, and is perfectly safe for people with metal allergies.
Although we are best know for our sterling silver, gold & rose gold vermeil is an elegant way to pick out details and provide a contrast, and gold just seems to suit certain skin tones. So, silver, gold or rose gold vermeil - the choice is yours!
